Call for EFCC to Investigate Former Anambra Governor, Obiano

The call has been made for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to initiate an investigation into alleged corruption involving the former Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano. Dede Uzor, the Executive Director of the Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders Foundation, conveyed this request in a statement issued in Awka on Tuesday.

Uzor emphasized the need for Obiano to be held accountable for his eight-year tenure, asserting that the former governor failed to implement measures with a direct positive impact on the state's populace. According to Uzor, Obiano's administration left Anambra in severe poverty, with its so-called legacies consisting of airports, stadiums, and other seemingly futile projects that did not benefit the people.

Uzor further pointed out that local government chairmen from Obiano's era should also face investigation for alleged corruption, accusing them of diverting funds allocated for local development.

During Obiano's term, Uzor claimed that Anambra State experienced a takeover by touts, lacked good roads, and saw minimal attention given to strategic economic projects, such as Niger Street leading to Onitsha Main Market.

In offering advice to Obiano's successor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, Uzor urged him to steer clear of the pitfalls observed in the previous administration. Additionally, Uzor encouraged Soludo to maintain focus and regularly disclose details of state revenue generation. Uzor recommended swift action on ongoing road construction projects, especially those of strategic importance, and engagement with the youth to address the high crime rate in the state.
