Biden creates a TikTok account in anticipation of the 2024 election
On Sunday, US President Joe Biden finally made his entrance onto TikTok, unveiling his presence on the social media platform through a 26-second video. This move follows persistent criticism of the video-sharing platform by the US government in recent years, particularly from Republicans and, notably, the Biden administration itself.
TikTok, owned by the Chinese firm ByteDance, has faced allegations from a broad spectrum of US politicians who claim it serves as a propaganda tool for Beijing—a charge vehemently denied by the company.
In a video shared on Sunday through the @bidenhq campaign account, the 81-year-old Democratic president humorously delves into various topics, including politics and the NFL championship game.
When questioned about his preference between the Super Bowl and its renowned half-time show, featuring singer Usher this year, he humorously opts for watching the actual game.
Addressing a playful inquiry about a supposed secret plot to manipulate the game, allowing pop star Taylor Swift (currently dating Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce) to leverage her fame for endorsing Biden, the president playfully embraces the baseless right-wing conspiracy theory.
"I would face consequences if I shared that with you," he mentions.
Due to security considerations, numerous states and the federal government have prohibited the app on official government devices.
In Montana, a recent attempt by the state government to entirely forbid the app was thwarted by a judge.
Although Washington continues to closely examine the platform, there seems to be no ongoing federal initiative to ban or restrict its usage.
"It appears that the notion of a ban was driven more by political motives than as a genuine legislative endeavor," remarks David Greene, a civil liberties attorney.
As the election draws near, the platform serves as a channel to connect with young voters.
The video on Sunday concludes with the president being questioned about his preference between himself and the leading Republican candidate, Donald Trump.
"Are you kidding?" he chuckles. "Biden."
