Bayelsa unveils own airline, completes first flight from Abuja
Bayelsa State’s recently launched airline, operated by Pioneer Airlines, successfully conducted its first flight from Abuja on Wednesday.
Governor Douye Diri, along with a group of notable local figures, received a warm welcome upon arriving at the Bayelsa International Airport.
The flight accommodated distinguished passengers, including the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission.
Upon landing at the airport, the aircraft was celebrated with a traditional water cannon salute, a customary aviation gesture to commemorate its inaugural flight.
Speaking to the crowd, Governor Diri referred to the occasion as a significant milestone in connecting Bayelsa to the rest of the nation and the globe.
He expressed that this was a moment for celebration and appreciation, signifying a major enhancement of the state’s aviation capabilities and economic prospects.
He stated, “Six years ago, we assured the people of Bayelsa of a future filled with air connectivity and opportunities. Today, that promise is taking flight: Bayelsa is introducing its own commercial air services.
“On behalf of the Government of Renewed Hope for Assured Prosperity, I am thrilled to unveil the first of two ATR-72/600 aircraft, each designed to accommodate 72 passengers and crew members.
“This accomplishment signifies the dawn of a new era of connectivity for Bayelsa, providing regular and dependable air services that stimulate modern commerce and development, linking businesses to new markets, and enabling our people to prosper.”
Governor Diri instructed that the aircraft be named “Air Bayelsa” or “Bayelsa Air” before it commences public operations, emphasizing that the name must clearly indicate its state ownership.
He acknowledged his predecessors, the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who initially envisioned the airport, and former Governor Seriake Dickson, who completed its construction.
He expressed gratitude to Premium Trust Bank, Pioneer Airlines, and the state House of Assembly for their contributions in securing the aircraft.
Air Vice-Marshal Nelson Calmday (rtd), Managing Director of Bayelsa Airport Limited, outlined the flight schedule, which will link Bayelsa to major cities such as Lagos and Abuja, along with essential Niger Delta locations including Port Harcourt, Warri, Uyo, and Calabar.
He commended the governor for financing the project using state assets instead of loans and confirmed that the cabin crew has completed their training and is prepared for operations.
Capt. Henry Ungbuku, Managing Director of Pioneer Airlines, promised that the airline would fulfill the aspirations of the Bayelsan people.
Mr. Emmanuel Emefienim, CEO of Premium Trust Bank, emphasized the project as a significant achievement stemming from a robust partnership, expressing pride in the bank’s involvement.
