Authorities apprehend 10 individuals in connection with the tragic demise of a FUOYE student
On Thursday, the Ekiti State Police Command disclosed the apprehension of 10 individuals in relation to the tragic demise of Modupe Deborah, a student at the Federal University, Oye Ekiti.
DSP Abutu Sunday, the spokesperson for the command, conveyed this update through the command's X (formerly Twitter) account. Sunday further elaborated that the unfortunate incident involved the 200-level nursing student, who had been reported missing within the university premises on September 5, 2023.
The PRO revealed that Deborah's lifeless body was discovered in a shallow grave, located approximately 30 meters behind the Nursing Lecture Hall.
Sunday conveyed, "I wish to notify the general public that Ekiti State's Commissioner of Police, CP Ogundare Dare, has issued orders for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the passing of Atanda Modupe Deborah, a 200-level nursing student at Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). She had been reported missing within the university premises on September 5, 2023, and was subsequently discovered deceased in a shallow grave located approximately 30 meters behind the Nursing Lecture Hall."
He assured that the police would ensure those responsible for this crime would face the full extent of the law.
"While urging everyone to remain composed, the commissioner is determined that the command will exhaust all efforts to uncover the identity of the perpetrator(s) and ensure they are brought to justice in accordance with the law."
"The command encourages anyone possessing valuable information pertaining to this unfortunate incident to kindly visit either the Oye Divisional Police Headquarters in Oye-Ekiti or the State CIID. Alternatively, they can make contact through the provided phone numbers: 09064050086 or 08053499199.
"In the interim, the deceased's body has been placed in the morgue for the purpose of conducting an autopsy. Currently, 10 individuals are in custody, undergoing thorough investigation."
Previously, the university administration had publicized the student's demise in a statement signed by the Registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim.
Ibrahim stated, "Earlier today, the Management had shared the distressing news of the student's disappearance and had assured that an ongoing investigation was actively working to ascertain the whereabouts of the unfortunate student."
"However, recent updates received by the university's security department confirm the unfortunate demise of the mentioned student.
"While the University Management extends its heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and the entire university community, with special consideration for our beloved students, we emphasize that the investigation is still in progress. This investigation is being carried out in close collaboration with national security agencies to uncover the underlying causes of this tragic incident and ensure that those responsible face legal consequences."
