Arewa youth assembly rejects new tax law
The Arewa Youth Assembly has expressed its disapproval of the newly published tax law by the Federal Government, raising concerns about possible inconsistencies between the version endorsed by the National Assembly and the one that has been made public.
In a statement authored by its Speaker, Mohammed Salihu Danlami, the Assembly declared its position as "clear and unequivocal," highlighting reports that suggest the gazetted law may include clauses not found in the bill sanctioned by legislators.
The organization asserted that any discrepancies between the legislation approved by elected officials and the version disseminated to the public pose significant constitutional and governance issues.
"Legislation embodies the collective will of the populace as represented by their parliament. Any modifications made after approval compromise due process and diminish public trust," the statement contended.
The youth organization clarified that its rejection of the tax law stemmed from a perceived lack of transparency in the law's development, coupled with the ongoing economic difficulties faced by Nigerians, such as inflation, insecurity, and unemployment.
While recognizing the importance of civic duty, the Assembly emphasized that fiscal policies must be grounded in legality, transparency, and legislative integrity, especially during a period marked by widespread economic struggles.
The statement referenced reports that the National Assembly had approved a tax framework following discussions and modifications, but alleged that the gazetted version varied significantly, demanding immediate clarification to avert further deterioration of public confidence in democratic institutions.
The Arewa Youth Assembly called on civil society groups, legal professionals, labor unions, and lawmakers to thoroughly investigate the issue and ensure rigorous adherence to constitutional processes.
It also mentioned that political accountability is fundamental to democratic governance, cautioning that current policy choices could shape public opinion leading up to forthcoming elections.
The group reiterated its dedication to promoting accountability, transparency, and inclusive governance, instructing its branches across various zones, states, local governments, and wards to await further directives.
