A police officer in Akwa Ibom is in custody for the alleged killing of a farmer

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has placed Inspector Oliver Akang under detention in connection with the alleged killing of a farmer, Umoh Charlie, on September 9, 2023.

SP Odiko Ogbeche-Macdon, the State Police Public Relations Officer, revealed this during an interview with our correspondent on Sunday.

Ogbeche-Macdon explained that the State Criminal Investigation Department has taken charge of the case at the direction of the State Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi.

He stated, "The officer in question remains in custody, and the matter is currently under the scrutiny of the State CID, overseen by the Deputy Commissioner, as per the Commissioner of Police's directive. The command has not remained silent and is committed to addressing any outstanding matters."

Akang, along with five other police officers from the Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Cultism Unit of the command, reportedly carried out a raid on Ibong Otoro village on September 9, 2023, during which they discharged their firearms indiscriminately.

Information obtained by our correspondent indicates that during the operation, a bullet, reportedly discharged from Akang's firearm, struck Charlie.

Subsequently, the police officers were reported to have left the location after the fatal shooting of the father of four.

In a prior interview with our correspondent, the family members of the deceased alleged that the state command provided them with N1.2 million and requested them to sign an agreement promising not to pursue legal actions or publicize the matter.

Esther, the deceased's sister, and Destiny, his brother, conveyed this information to our correspondent.

"However, our primary concern now is justice. Our late brother left behind four children, with the oldest being 10 years old. With his wife unemployed, there is currently no one to support the children," Esther expressed to our correspondent.
