Muslim youths take to the streets of Sokoto asking for the release of Deborah Samuel’s killers

TENSION continues to mount in Sokoto over the recent killing of Shehu Shagari College of Education student Deborah Samuel with angry Muslims youths taking to the streets demanding the police release her killers.

On Thursday, Ms Samuel, a 200 Level Home Economics students at the college had been killed by an irate mob who accused her of blaspheming against the Prophet Mohammed. Having pursued Ms Samuel to the security lodge where the guards were overpowered she was then set upon and stoned to death before being set ablaze.

Following the incident, there has been a nationwide outrage, putting the authorities under pressure to bring the culprits to book. Consequently, the Sokoto State Police Command has arrested several students of the college suspected of being the killers of Ms Samuel, with plans to arraign them in court.

However, earlier today, protesters trooped into the streets of Sokoto, demanding the release of these suspects. These protesters who stormed streets in large number, wielded placards with inscriptions saying “Release our Muslim brothers” and “Muslims Are Not Terrorists”, among others.
