Pastor Peter Michonza of the New Jerusalem Deliverance Ministry, Ageva, in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State, has been remanded at the Federal Correctional Centre Kabba for 14 days by a Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Lokoja.
Pastor Michonza was arrested by the Department of State Security on September 19, 2022, following an outcry from the people of the local government and the council chairman over allegations that he ran labor wards for pregnant women in his church and sold “bulletproof” water to the people, among other medically unacceptable practices that resulted in the deaths of many innocent people.
The order was issued by the presiding Chief Magistrate, Abdul A. Umar, on Thursday, following an experte application by the Department of State Services to remand the accused person so that further investigations could be conducted.
In an experte application, the accused was accused of culpable homicide, causing miscarriage, and impersonation, all of which are punishable under sections 224, 232, 433, and 325 of the Kogi State Penal Code.
After the preliminary investigations are completed, the suspect will be charged in the High Court of Justice.
Lawrence Ilobuno, the defendant’s counsel, told reporters that his client was arrested by the DSS on September 19, 2022, and had since been detained in their custody without trial.
According to him, he has approached the Magistrate to file an application for bail because the suspect has remained in custody for more than the required number of days after being charged in court.
Ilbuno stated that the Magistrate remanded the suspect at Kabba Correctional Centre for another 14 days based on an experte application filed by the DSS for remand to allow them to conduct further investigations.
In his ruling, the presiding Chief Magistrate adjourned the case until October 20, 2022 for mention.
