Turkish Football Association may refrain from penalizing Osayi-Samuel for several reasons

Reports suggesting that Super Eagles player, Bright Osayi-Samuel, might face a suspension of five to ten games due to an altercation with a pitch invader during Fenerbahce's match against Trabzonspor may not hold true as the Turkish Football Association could opt not to impose a ban. The incident occurred after the final whistle when Fenerbahce celebrated their 3-2 victory, leading to a brawl as fans invaded the pitch. Security personnel intervened to protect the Fenerbahce players, while authorities, including Turkey's interior minister Ali Yerlikaya, confirmed an investigation into the incident to identify the individuals involved.

The Turkey Football Federation issued a statement on Sunday addressing the events that unfolded during and after the match between Trabzonspor A.Ş. and Fenerbahçe A.Ş. in the Trendyol Super League. The federation emphasized that the incidents that occurred in football, a sport of friendship, peace, and brotherhood, are unacceptable. They assured that they are actively communicating with representatives and state officials regarding the matter and stated their commitment to imposing necessary criminal sanctions on those responsible once the investigations are completed, aiming to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

Osayi-Samuel stepped in to defend a female police officer and his Belgian teammate Michi Batshuayi, engaging in a physical altercation with the invading supporters. He retaliated by throwing punches and successfully bringing one of the intruders to the ground.

After an investigation, authorities detained 12 individuals. Additionally, there were deliberations on whether the Fenerbahçe players who reacted to the fans would face penalties.

According to Turkish Sports Lawyer Fatih Şaşıoğlu, clubs, players, and other club staff could face sanctions following the field incidents that occurred after the match on Sunday. These sanctions are outlined in the Turkish Football Federation Football Disciplinary Instruction. Şaşıoğlu stated that Trabzonspor Club might be fined and penalized for playing without spectators due to the actions of Trabzonspor fans entering the competition area. Additionally, individuals who attacked opposing team players and staff may also face sanctions, including bans from matches or restrictions from entering the locker room and bench area.

Nevertheless, Article 4 of the Turkish FA rules stipulates that players are entitled to defend themselves against individuals who enter the competition area and pose a threat to football players, as was the situation with Osayi-Samuel.

The Criminal Procedure Law regulates provisions regarding self-defense. It is established as a principle that no punishment will be imposed for actions taken to fend off an unjust attack on one's or another's rights, provided that the attack is certain to occur or be repeated, and the response is proportional to the prevailing circumstances. However, for an action to qualify as self-defense, these conditions must be fully and completely met.”

In the wake of the chaotic scenes following the game against Trabzonspor and Osayi-Samuel's fervent defense of his team during the tumultuous moments, Fenerbahçe fans have expressed their admiration by creating a graffiti mural of the Nigerian player.
