Wike unveils 198km water pipeline project in Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesome Wike, has launched Lot 1 of a 198km water pipeline initiative aimed at supplying clean water to the inhabitants of Bwari Area Council and adjacent communities.

During the project announcement on Wednesday, Wike affirmed that President Bola Tinubu has kept his commitment to deliver pipe-borne water to the citizens of Abuja.

“One commendable aspect of Mr. President is that he consistently delivers on his commitments. Today, we are in Bwari. Tomorrow, our focus will shift to Karu, effectively addressing two area councils.”

“The President has directed that this contract should be completed within 18 months. However, we have engaged with the contractors, requesting them to exert every effort so that we can inaugurate these projects by the third anniversary of Mr. President,” he stated.

Wike also mentioned that 50% of the overall contract amount has been approved and paid to the contractors, China Geo-engineering Construction Limited, emphasizing that the government is expanding development into satellite towns as well as the central city area.

“The contractors have assured us that they will do their utmost if funds are made available. Consequently, Mr. President promptly sanctioned the release of 50% of the total contract amount to CGC Nigeria Limited.

“This indicates that we are not limiting development to the city center. We are also directing development efforts towards the area councils. By the completion of work in Bwari and Karu, we hope that next year’s budget will allow us to extend to Kuje and Kwali. By 2027, with divine grace, we hope to reach Gwagwalada and Abaji,” the minister expressed.

He also noted that the project is expected to generate “at least 1,600 direct jobs,” and that it will eliminate the need for residents to dig boreholes, allowing them to connect directly to the main water supply.

In his speech, Richard Dauda, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, stated that the pipes installed will distribute water to “not only the residents of Bwari township, but also to Ushafa, Jigu, Kuduru, Kuchuku, and other communities within the Bwari Area Council,” thereby enhancing the quality of life for the people.
