Trump set for royal honours in second UK visit
United States President Donald Trump is poised to receive grand royal honors this week during his historic second official visit to the United Kingdom. The visit will include a carriage procession and a flyover featuring King Charles III, as well as a luxurious state banquet at Windsor Castle.
British officials are optimistic that the grandeur will resonate with Trump’s fascination for the monarchy and assist Prime Minister Keir Starmer in establishing a connection with the US president ahead of discussions on trade, tariffs, and the situation in Ukraine.
The primary events of the trip will take place outside of London to evade large-scale protests anticipated in the capital. Demonstrators plan to gather there to express their discontent with the 79-year-old Republican leader.
Although they are unlikely partners, Starmer has put significant effort into gaining Trump’s confidence since he returned to the White House in January. “This is truly special, it has never occurred before, this is without precedent,” Starmer stated in February while he personally presented King Charles’ invitation to Trump in the Oval Office. Trump complimented the monarch, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, describing Charles as a “great, great gentleman.”
The state visit heavily emphasizes Trump’s respect for royal customs and British culture, influenced in part by his Scottish heritage.
Trump often fondly reminisces about his 2019 state visit when he met Queen Elizabeth II, and now he will make history as the first US president to receive such an honor twice. Prince William and Princess Catherine will kick off the visit by greeting the Trumps in Windsor.
Later, King Charles and Queen Camilla will oversee a day filled with ceremonies, including a military flyover, a carriage parade, and a Beating Retreat display, culminating with a state banquet. Trump will also make a private visit to the late queen’s resting place.
Discussions at Chequers, the prime minister’s country estate, are anticipated to yield agreements on “a world-leading tech partnership” and “a significant civil nuclear agreement,” as per British officials.
The issue of Ukraine will be a major topic, with European leaders urging Trump to maintain support for Kyiv despite indications of a shift toward Russia’s Vladimir Putin. First Lady Melania Trump will accompany Queen Camilla in Windsor for a tour of the Queen Mary Dolls’ House, and later participate in a scouting event with Catherine.
Underlying tensions include apprehensions regarding free speech in the UK, with the White House confirming that Trump will address this matter. Another delicate topic is the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, which resulted in the dismissal of Britain’s ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, because of his connections to the disgraced financier.
