Police quiz Abia lawmaker over alleged assault on bolt driver

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed that Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, is currently being interrogated at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.

Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North & South Federal Constituency, is accused of assaulting Stephen Abuwatseya, an e-hailing (Bolt) driver.

According to a viral video, the lawmaker slapped the driver when he asked for the delivery fee, questioning whether the driver knew who he was speaking to.

The lawmaker also threatened to make the driver "disappear" without consequences.

The police, according to a statement issued by command spokesperson Josephine Adeh on Monday, have launched an investigation into the matter.

She added that preliminary investigations revealed that Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwegh when a disagreement arose over the method of delivery.

Adeh stated, "Alexander Ikwegh represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident happened on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent in Maitama, Abuja.

"The FCT Police Command received a report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters about an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituencies in Abia State. The incident happened on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent in Maitama, Abuja.

The FCT Police Command is deeply concerned about Hon. Ikwegh's dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police in the aftermath of the incident.

Adeh slammed the lawmaker for bringing the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, into disrepute by daring the driver to call him after slapping him.

She stated, "After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, 'You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,' demonstrating a troubling disregard for law enforcement authority."

"Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning."

Adeh also stated that CP Tunji Disu has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.

She stated, "The Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter."

"The Command is dedicated to conducting impartial investigations and ensuring justice in all cases. Following the conclusion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken.
