Nigeria@64: Tinubu unveils plan to create 2.5m jobs

President Bola Tinubu announced plans to create 2.5 million jobs during his 64th Independence Day address. Tinubu announced the Renewed Hope Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme, a government initiative that aims to create 2.5 million jobs per year.

The program will create both direct and indirect employment opportunities throughout the country.

LEEP, which is set to begin in November 2024, aims to improve the welfare and safety of Nigerian workers. Tinubu described the initiative as a key component of his administration's unemployment-reduction strategy, which will be carried out through the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

"Later this month, we shall launch the Renewed Hope Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme," the president stated during his speech. "It is conceived as a comprehensive suite of interventions aimed at facilitating the creation of 2.5 million jobs, directly and indirectly, on an annual incremental basis, while simultaneously ensuring the welfare and safety of workers across the country."

In addition to the employment program, President Tinubu announced plans for a 30-day national youth conference. The conference will discuss economic issues and ensure that young Nigerians' voices are heard in government policies.

"Better days are ahead for Nigeria," Tinubu said, urging citizens to remain optimistic despite the country's current economic challenges.
