Nigeria’s fuel consumption drops to 1.44bn litres in June – NMDPRA

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has reported a decrease in fuel usage during June 2025, with total fuel evacuation amounting to 1.44 billion litres.

George Ene-Ita, the Director of Public Affairs, confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that the daily consumption averaged 48 million litres, adjusting previous estimates that had indicated a figure of 38.94 million litres, as reported by NAN.

He pointed out that the total for June, which stood at 1,440,768,129 litres, represented a decline of 16.42 per cent compared to May’s 1,768,812,804 litres—indicating a decrease of over 290 million litres.

Ene-Ita clarified that the June total reflects a daily average evacuation of 48,025,604 litres, derived by dividing the monthly total by the 30 days in June.

An analysis of the data revealed a 1.73 per cent increase in the supply of Automotive Gas Oil, or diesel, which rose to 432.18 million litres in June, from 424.83 million litres in May, according to the NMDPRA report.

Despite the rise in diesel supply, its distribution (truck-out) saw a fall of 23.23 per cent, decreasing from 552.35 million litres in May to 424.06 million litres in June.

The report also indicated a 13 per cent reduction in the supply and distribution of Household Kerosene, dropping from nearly nine million litres in May to 7.79 million litres in June.

Automotive gasoline experienced the sharpest decline, falling by nearly 48 per cent—from 72.36 million litres in May to 37.66 million litres in June.

The report highlighted that overall fuel distribution decreased by 16.54 per cent during the same period.

It also provided a breakdown of truck-out volumes by state, contributing to the 1.44 billion litres evacuated in June. Lagos received the largest portion at 205.66 million litres, followed by Ogun with 88.69 million litres, the Federal Capital Territory with 77.51 million litres, and Oyo with 72.81 million litres.

The NMDPRA stated that the reduction in supply and distribution reflects ongoing challenges in the midstream and downstream petroleum sectors, which have impacted national fuel consumption in June. It committed to collaborating with stakeholders to enhance distribution and ensure a consistent supply across the country.
