Katsina to introduce special allowance for rural area teachers
The Katsina government has announced plans to implement a special allowance package for teachers assigned to rural regions. The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Zainab Musa-Musawa, made this announcement during a one-day summit in Katsina on Tuesday.
The summit was conducted in partnership with Save the Children International and GoalPrime Nigeria, with funding provided by Education Cannot Wait.
The commissioner mentioned an initiative to provide teachers with a percentage of their salary as compensation.
Ms. Musa-Musawa stated that the purpose of the allowance is to motivate teachers to accept postings in rural locations, particularly in areas facing minor security issues. She expressed concern over the tendency of many teachers to prefer urban settings, resulting in a shortage of educators in rural areas.
She emphasized that the ministry is actively working to address the problem and expressed confidence that the new allowance would have a positive impact.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the summit was held to commemorate the International Day to Protect Education from Attack.
