Immigration to combat corruption via digital transformation

The Nigeria Immigration Service has reaffirmed its commitment to using digital transformation to enhance service delivery and combat corruption.

The Comptroller General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, made the announcement on Thursday during the official launch of the Service's 3rd Nationwide Sensitisation and Awareness Campaign Against Corruption 2025, themed "Increased Digitalisation and Consolidated Innovations for Efficient and Transparent Services."

Nandap stated that the agency is using cutting-edge technology, such as the Contactless Passport Application System and the soon-to-be-released e-Visa platform, to increase productivity, reduce red tape, and prevent unethical behaviour.

She emphasised how important technology is in creating a more open immigration system.

She also stated that the NIS is strengthening strategic alliances with key anti-corruption organisations, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, SERVICOM, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

According to her, these collaborations are intended to strengthen internal control systems and uphold ethical standards within the agency.

The Director General of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council, Princess Zahrah Mustapha Audu, stated that corruption remains a significant impediment to Nigeria's economic development and ease of doing business.

She praised the NIS for taking proactive steps to advance a service-driven immigration system that benefits national development.

Mrs. Nnena Akajemeli, National Coordinator and Chief Executive of SERVICOM, and Mr. Demola Bakare, Representative of the Director General of the ICPC, praised the Service for prioritising efficiency and transparency in service delivery through its anti-corruption drive.

The NIS introduced the contactless renewal system in October of last year, with plans to roll it out on November 1 in Canada and Nigeria in December.
