Fun Seekers Flock to Suntan Beach for Easter Celebration
Amid economic challenges in Nigeria, Easter revelers flock to parks, beaches, and event centers in Lagos for enjoyment.
President Bola Tinubu, after taking office on May 29, 2023, abolished fuel subsidies, citing their drain on the country's revenue. This decision resulted in a notable surge in fuel prices, affecting transportation costs and household expenses. Consequently, prices of essential goods like food and building materials skyrocketed.
Moreover, the depreciation of the naira against the dollar exacerbated economic woes, further driving up prices of commodities and services.
In their Easter messages, governors, senators, and other prominent figures encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the country's economic challenges.
They expressed optimism that President Tinubu's economic reforms would alleviate hardship in the nation soon.
Nevertheless, despite the difficulties, fun seekers from various regions of the country gathered at Suntan Beach in Badagry, Lagos State, to celebrate Easter on Monday.
During festive periods, Lagos beaches like Landmark Beach, La Campagne Tropicana, Tarkwa Bay, Barracuda Beach, and others become popular destinations for fun seekers.
Joseph Oliver, a resident of Agbara in Ogun State, expressed that visiting the beach is an annual tradition for him and his family.
"Despite the current economic challenges, I made sure to save some money to celebrate the Easter holiday with my family," Oliver shared.
"Despite the challenges, we must acknowledge God's protection and bring our wives and children here to appreciate nature's beauty," he remarked.
"We must rally behind President Bola Tinubu's government in its efforts for a brighter future for the country," he added.
Christiana Adeleke, who traveled from Igando in Lagos, expressed her excitement about celebrating the Easter holiday with her three children at the beach.
"Since my separation from my husband in 2019, I've made it a tradition to bring my children to Suntan Beach for Easter because where there's life, there's hope," she shared.
"However, I didn't expect to make it this year until two days ago when a generous person sent money to my account, allowing us to celebrate together," she continued.
"Although the economic challenges affect us all, I have faith that God will work through our President to bring about positive change in the country," she concluded.
Adeleke praised the Federal Government for reconstructing the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, highlighting the smooth ride they experienced from FESTAC Town to the Badagry roundabout.
Meanwhile, other fun seekers were spotted at Oniru Beach and Landmark Beach, among other locations, enjoying the Easter holiday with loved ones, family, and friends.
Ewatomi Mary, one of the fun seekers, mentioned her preference for Oniru Beach due to its proximity.
"Besides the affordability factor, Oniru Beach is my top choice because I'm familiar with the area. Today, I easily went there with my sisters. Tomorrow, we're back to work," Mary shared.
