FG didn’t tamper with MTN, 9Mobile, other internet connection – Minister

Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has denied allegations that the Federal Government directed telecom providers to interrupt network services during the statewide protests that began on Thursday.

The allegations came after some Nigerians complained about extremely slow internet connections and resorted to social media to vent their concerns. This sparked speculation that the administration was purposely limiting network services to hinder the protests.

Tijani denied any such mandate, telling Channels Television that the Federal Government has not issued instructions to interfere with telecommunications networks.

He ascribed the poor internet speeds to an increase in online activity, as many people stayed at home due to the ongoing protests that began on August 1.

"There is no instruction to tamper with phone networks," Tijani explained. "You must understand that when a large number of people are not at work, they are online, and you would expect traffic to be really heavy. I am not suggesting that is the cause because I have not conducted any technical assessments," he stated.

The Minister's words try to allay worries about government meddling while also emphasising the possible consequences of increased online traffic during times of massive public disturbance.
