Delta monarch tasks farmers on food security
On Monday, His Majesty Obukowho Whisky Udurhie I, Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom in Delta State's Ethiope West Local Government Area, urged Nigerians to take advantage of the rainy season to increase food security in the state and across Nigeria. He stated that the time has come to stop whining about hunger and instead take advantage of the current rainy season by returning to the farms in order to achieve food security in the country.
The traditional ruler also urged the Federal Government to prioritise addressing the frequent farmers-herder disputes by ensuring farmers' security on their farms.
The monarch stated that instability has significantly hampered farming activity in most villages across the country, resulting in a national food deficit.
The monarch, who made the remarks while discussing vital national issues with media at his palace in Idjerhe Kingdom, stressed that Nigerians should not expect the government to provide food on their tables.
"Rather, all we need is government encouragement," he told me.
"The government should boost the security architecture of the country and encourage people to go to their farms so that if you struggle to put up a farm, nobody should destroy your farm," according to the monarch.
The Delta monarch therefore advised the Federal Government to decentralise its mechanisms of providing fertilisers to farmers by ensuring that it is now distributed along geopolitical zones.
"So that if a particular zone refuses to use their own to do farming, then at the next harvest season we can ask the question what did you do with yours?"
