Bluesky briefly suspends US VP JD Vance’s account
United States Vice President JD Vance experienced a short suspension on Bluesky shortly after he signed up for the decentralized social network on Wednesday evening.
The event, which caused some confusion among users, was promptly addressed, with the platform explaining that the measure was due to an automated system meant to identify possible impersonation attempts.
“A brief flag was placed on Vice President Vance’s account by our automated systems that aim to detect impersonation incidents, which have previously affected public figures like him,” a spokesperson from Bluesky stated to TechCrunch. “The account was swiftly restored and verified, enabling users to easily confirm its authenticity.”
The spokesperson further noted that Bluesky invites Vance to its platform and promotes open dialogue.
In Vance’s initial post, he discussed a contentious U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld a Tennessee law limiting gender-affirming care for transgender minors—a subject likely to generate discussion on the platform.
Bluesky, which aims to provide an alternative to conventional social media platforms, has been enhancing its moderation and verification processes as more notable individuals start to join.
