Glasgow Rangers join the race to sign Nigerian midfielder Alhassan Yusuf from Gothenburg

SCOTTISH champions Glasgow Rangers have joined the race to sign Nigerian midfielder Alhassan Yusuf from Swedish side IFK Gothenburg ahead of the forthcoming 2021/22 season.

Yusuf, 20, who joined Gothenburg from FC Hearts Nigeria three years ago, was voted Young Player of the Year in the Swedish top flight last season. English Premier League new boys Brentford are also being linked with Yusuf, who only has one year left on his contract at the Gamla Ullevi Stadium in Sweden.

Yusuf, previously linked with Wolves and Belgian side Club Brugge, could be available for around £1m. IFK Gothenburg narrowly avoided relegation last season but Yusuf, who featured 29 times for the club during the campaign, was regarded as one of their few positives and the club may decide to cash in on him.

“There have been some clubs that have been interested. If I am going to move, it should be something that is really good for me and IFK Gothenburg but now I am here and my focus is that we will be a top team this year.”

Last season, Wolverhampton Wanderers were reported to have made a £6.3m bid for Yusuf with a view to prising him away from Sweden. Yusuf started his career with the Tiki-Taka Academy in Nigeria before eventually moving to Goteborg in July 2018 and after coming through the youth ranks, became a regular with the club.
