Rema Encourages Colleagues to Embrace Afrobeats Genre
Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, known as Rema, asserted that irrespective of the various musical styles embraced by him and his fellow artists, they would unite under the "Afrobeats" banner for award ceremonies. Rema made this statement after receiving the Best Male Artiste of the Year award at the 2023 Headies Awards in Atlanta, USA, on Sunday.
He expressed, "I want to emphasize that my presence here isn't solely about the awards. It's crucial to support our institutions, and by institutions, I mean the entities that help us achieve significant milestones - the media outlets and award organizers."
"We find ourselves in a crucial period where it's imperative to prioritize our institutions; failing to do so means we might squander this unique opportunity, which may not come again.
"Whether it's called 'afrorave,' 'afro this,' or 'afro that,' in the end, we'll all converge at the Afrobeats awards. This is our moment. We, as Afrobeats artists, aren't the first to experience this. Reggae has navigated a similar path."
Rema's remarks come in response to artists like Burna Boy and others who have distanced themselves from the Afrobeats label, citing a desire to avoid being pigeonholed and alleging a lack of substance in the genre.
