Burna Boy Faces Significant Defeat at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards
Grammy Award-winning artist Burna Boy faced a clean sweep of losses on Tuesday night, with all seven of his nominations at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards going unrewarded. The event took place at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in America.
Among the categories, the 32-year-old artist lost Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, and Best Live Performer of the Year to American rapper Kendrick Lamar. Additionally, Burna Boy failed to secure the titles of Hustler of the Year, Best Collaboration of the Year for 'Sittin’ On Top Of The World' (losing to Lil Durk and J. Cole’s ‘All My Life’), Best Hip Hop Video for the same song (losing to Lil Uzi Vert), and Song of the Year.
In contrast, Ghanaian artist Black Sherif emerged victorious in the Best International Flow category, surpassing nominees like South Africa’s late AKA and K.O, France’s Gazo and Ninho, and the UK’s J Hus, Central Cee, among others.
On a different note, Burna Boy shared during an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra that the late Indian rapper Sidhu Moose Wala served as his source of inspiration when he was "musically exhausted." He revealed that they were collaborating on a joint project before Moose Wala's tragic assassination in May 2022. Burna Boy expressed, “I was exhausted musically, and I was just like, I need something new.”
