“Inside Out 2” breaks animated film records with $1.46bn
Disney and Pixar's "Inside Out 2" has surpassed animated film records, generating $1.46 billion worldwide since its premiere last month, cementing its place as the highest-grossing animated film to date. The sequel, directed by Kelsey Mann, has smashed prior benchmarks, most notably exceeding Barbie's $1.44 billion to take the top rank in animated movie history, according to global box office records.
"Inside Out 2" reached this milestone after a six-week theatrical run, grossing $861 million in overseas markets and $601 million in the US. In Nigeria alone, the film has grossed N40 million, sustaining a solid presence from its release on June 14, 2024, when it earned N24.2 million in the first ten days.
The production, which cost around $200 million, or twice as much as its predecessor, has also eclipsed milestones set by "Frozen II" ($1.45 billion), "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion), and the original "Frozen" ($1.29 billion).
The film, which has a varied ensemble, including Nigerian-Barbadian Ayo Edebiri as Envy, goes inside the mind of teenager Riley, exploring new emotions such as Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui alongside familiar characters Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust.
"Inside Out 2" made headlines earlier this year when it crossed the $1 billion mark in just 19 days of release, becoming Pixar's highest-grossing film and exceeding the global earnings of its predecessor, "Inside Out."
The sequel's blend of humour and emotional depth has captured fans while also sparking significant cultural conversations, making it a notable success in animated filmmaking.
