Google unveils the 'AI First Accelerator Program' for startups in Africa
The Head of Startup Ecosystem, Africa, mentioned that since its establishment in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator: Africa initiative has provided assistance to 106 startups hailing from 17 different African nations.
On Tuesday, Google introduced the "Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First," a program designed to assist African startups in utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address local issues.
In a statement, Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startup Ecosystem, Africa, emphasized that this program acknowledges the revolutionary impact of AI on a global scale, revolutionizing industries and expanding the horizons of what's achievable.
Aiyegbusi further noted that the initiative also underscores the substantial contributions made by African startups in tackling some of the region's most urgent issues using AI.
"Africa's dynamic and continuously evolving tech scene is truly inspiring. Witnessing African startups not only employ AI to confront our distinct challenges but also establish new standards for the international arena is truly remarkable," he remarked.

He further underscored that this program also spotlights the substantial contributions made by African startups in confronting some of the most critical challenges in the region through the utilization of AI. The 'AI First' program, he conveyed, is dedicated to aiding startups eager to explore the potential of AI.
Drawing insights from previous endeavors such as the Google for Startups Accelerator: Africa and the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund, among others, the program maintains a consistent core goal: to bolster and showcase African-driven solutions.
Aiyegbusi elaborated that participants would gain access to Google's AI expertise, technical resources encompassing up to $350,000 in Google Cloud Credits, guidance from experienced AI professionals, and invaluable networking prospects.
Aiyegbusi noted that since its establishment in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator: Africa program has provided support to 106 startups across 17 African countries. He highlighted that collectively, these startups have successfully secured over $263 million in funding and generated more than 2,800 direct job opportunities in the region.
He announced that applications are currently being accepted for the 10-week equity-free accelerator program, targeting startups up to the series A stage situated in Africa or developing AI and machine learning solutions tailored to Africa.
