Amusan’s victory, beginning of great things for Nigerian athletics – Sunday Dare

Sports Minister Sunday Dare has joined millions of Nigerians in congratulating Tobi Amusan for winning the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States of America,

Tobi Amusan broke the world record in the 100m hurdles with an amazing 12.12s in the semi-final and followed it up (+2.5) with a wind-aided 12.06s in the final.

Haven reached out to all these Nigerians who were showering her with messages and congratulating her for showing the whole world the power of Africa.

In its congratulatory message, Sunday Dare said Amusan’s victory will be the start of great things for Nigerian athletics.

His words: “I’m so proud of what Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume and even those who didn’t make the podium did in Eugene, Oregon. This is the start of big things for Nigerian athletics. This is a new dawn.

“Years of hard work and constant knocking on doors have paid the right dividends. For the first time in history, we have a world champion. That’s huge. Congratulations to Nigeria.”

“For me, these medals are not the only positive of the World Cup. The 4x100m relay teams (men and women) showed a lot of promise for the future.

“The women barely got here as the 16th best team in the world, but they came so close to getting on the podium, the men also gave it their all and showed they have a great future.

Our athletes also showed character in short sprints. Some of them are competing at a high level like this for the first time, rubbing shoulders with highly experienced and tournament-proven veterans and legends, and not falling short in extremely demanding situations.

“They can beat their chests and be proud of what they have achieved. Now we have a responsibility to continue supporting them by creating the right environment for them to grow.”

“We have now gained a lot of momentum going into the Commonwealth Games, this will definitely inspire Team Nigeria to make a huge impact in Birmingham,” Mr. Dare concluded.
