Leon Balogun joins Championship side Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season

Leon Balogun joins Championship side Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season

SUPER Eagles centreback Leon Balogun has joined English Championship side Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season in a bid to get more playing time due to his current inaction at Brighton Athletic.

Balogun 31, joined English Premier League side Brighton from Mainz in Germany on a two year deal but since moving to England has found games hard to come by. His lack of action has led Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr to drop Balogun from his recent squads and there are now suggestions that the defender’s international career could be over.

In a bid to get back into the scheme of things, Balogun made a deadline day switch to Wigan, dropping a division in the hope that he will see more action. Wigan are currently sitting 22nd in the 24-team Championship table, conceding a total of 44 goals this season, so need to shore up their defence.

With 32 international caps to his name, Balogun was a permanent feature in the Super Eagles during the last World Cup, playing 90 minutes of all three group games. However, since joining the Seagulls in 2018 from Mainz, he has only featured in 12 games across all competitions for Brighton.
