Senegal sack AFCON-winning coach Aliou Cisse
Senegal has decided to part ways with coach Aliou Cisse, who led the team to victory in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations as well as the previous two World Cups.According to the local football association, Senegal sports minister Khady Diene Gaye took the initiative after the government requested that his contract not be renewed.
Cisse, a former national team captain and Paris Saint-Germain player, took over as coach in 2015, and the country won its first AFCON title two years later.
Senegal also advanced to the 2022 World Cup's round of 16, but were eliminated at the same stage in this year's AFCON by hosts and eventual champions Ivory Coast.
The Senegalese FA announced that an interim coaching team would replace the 48-year-old Cisse for the two 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Malawi this month.
Senegal is tied with Burkina Faso on four points after two games in a group that also includes Burundi.
They are also unbeaten in 2026 World Cup qualifying, trailing group leaders Sudan by two points after four games.
