Breaking News: Nigeria's Super Falcons Amaze with Stunning Victory over Australia at Women's World C

Nigeria delivered a stunning upset at the Women's World Cup, leaving co-hosts Australia's tournament hopes in jeopardy. Asisat Oshoala's volley into an open goal in the 72nd minute secured a well-deserved 3-2 victory for the Africans. Uchenna Kanu's equalizer just before halftime and Osinachi Ohale's goal after the break had put Nigeria in the lead.

Although Australia managed to reduce the deficit with Alanna Kennedy's header in stoppage time, Nigeria held on in the final moments to claim one of the most remarkable victories in their history at the global tournament.

Nigeria's triumph in front of a massive crowd at Lang Park propelled them to the top of Group B, tied with Canada on four points but ahead on goal difference. The 11-time African champions will face Ireland, who have been eliminated, in their final group match.

To secure a spot in the last 16, the Matildas must defeat Olympic champions Canada in their last group match. Despite considering themselves strong title contenders, Australia faced challenges as they lacked talismanic striker Sam Kerr and attacking midfielder Mary Fowler due to injuries. The makeshift forward line created numerous opportunities, but the ball failed to find the back of the net on numerous occasions in both halves.

Van Egmond reflected on the match, saying, "We had so many chances, but it was just one of those nights where we couldn't convert them into goals."

"The final 10 minutes exemplified our team's spirit and determination, never giving up. We'll carry that attitude into the next game, where a victory is crucial."

Australia coach Tony Gustavsson included midfielder Van Egmond in his starting 11, while Nigeria boss Randy Waldrum opted to bring striker Oshoala off the bench during the second half.

Both players had an impact on the game, but Oshoala's contribution proved to be decisive. She capitalized on a communication breakdown between Kennedy and goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, seizing the opportunity to score Nigeria's third goal.

Australia took the initiative early on, benefitting from a poor goal kick that allowed Katrina Gorry to volley the ball to Caitlin Foord, who provided a well-timed cross for Van Egmond to slot in a low shot in the first minute of first-half stoppage time.

However, Australia's moment of happiness was short-lived as Rasheedat Ajibade took advantage of a defensive lapse and fired a powerful shot. The deflection landed perfectly for Uchenna Kanu, who capitalized on the opportunity to score from close-range seconds before the halftime whistle.

Australia came close to breaking the deadlock just two minutes into the second half, with Katrina Gorry striking a loose ball that narrowly went over the crossbar.

Yet, it was Ajibade who once again made a significant impact. Her header from a corner found its way towards the far post, leading to Osinachi Ohale nudging the ball over the goal line in the 65th minute.

Under immense pressure, Australia's defense crumbled, allowing Oshoala to seal the victory by skillfully threading a volley into the net from a challenging angle. The home fans were left in complete shock as silence engulfed the stadium.
