Top 10 African countries with visa friendliness from 2016 to 2024
Travel between African countries is becoming more easy as a result of widespread visa policy improvements.According to the most recent "Africa Visa Openness Index," 39 countries increased their visa scores between 2016 and 2024, indicating that travel restrictions are gradually being eased.
The research identifies significant progress in African countries' attempts to facilitate cross-border travel. Over the last eight years, five nations have achieved the most significant improvements: Benin has risen to first place (from 31st to 1st), followed by Ethiopia (from 46th to 19th), Sierra Leone (from 32nd to 13th), Nigeria (from 25th to 6th), and Gambia.
These improvements demonstrate a willingness to embrace visa liberalization, with some nations now sharing the top spot, a significant milestone in regional travel cooperation.
One of the most noticeable trends is a significant growth in visa-free travel for African people. The number of intra-Africa travel situations that do not require a visa has climbed from 20% in 2016 to 28% in 2024, representing a 40% increase in visa-free travel chances over the last nine years.
These trends indicate that Africa is becoming a more connected region, increasing tourism, economic, and cultural interactions as borders become more open to travelers from across the continent.
