São Tomé and Príncipe Fishermen Stranded in Atlantic Ocean Miraculously Rescued in Bayelsa
The rescue of two fishermen who had been missing in the Atlantic Ocean for five days has been officially confirmed by the Bayelsa State Police Command.
Two fishermen from Neves, São Tomé and Príncipe, named Antonio Sabino, aged 52, and Osorio Pires, aged 41, had been lost at sea for five days in the Atlantic Ocean. However, their harrowing ordeal came to an end when they were rescued by the captain of a fishing trawler located 50 nautical miles off the coast of the Brass Council Area in Bayelsa State on Sunday, July 2.
SP Asinim Bustwat, a police spokesperson, confirmed the successful rescue of the two Portuguese-speaking fishermen. The Divisional Police Officer of Okpoama Division, Brass Local Government Area, has taken custody of Antonio Sabino and Osorio Pires.
SP Bustwat further revealed that the police have established contact with a coast guard officer from São Tomé and Príncipe, and they are actively working towards reuniting the rescued fishermen with their families.
According to Munalayefa William-Sinte, the chairman of the Okpoama Kingdom Security Committee, the language barrier posed a challenge in communicating with the rescued fishermen. Verbal communication was not possible, but they managed to calm the visibly worried men using sign language before transferring them to the custody of the police.
William-Sinte further revealed that there is an ongoing search for a fisherman from Ilaje in Ondo State who has been missing for over a week. The fisherman, who is a resident of Okpoama, has prompted his colleagues to tirelessly search the ocean for days in hopes of finding him.
