Payments for waste evacuation in FCT now performance-based — Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has warned newly engaged waste‑evacuation contractors that payments will be strictly performance‑based. During an interactive meeting with 54 newly contracted solid‑waste evacuation companies in Abuja on Friday, Wike announced that a task force will be set up immediately to monitor operations and that payments will only be released upon satisfactory performance.

Wike emphasized that managing waste is a difficult job and urged contractors to treat it as an assignment for the development of the capital city. “Please help us to keep the city clean. It’s a job you applied for; nobody forced you, and I assure you that your payment is not a problem. Do the job as required and do it very well. There will be no favoritism. Your job is what will speak for you, and you must get the job done,” he said.

He warned that contracts will be terminated if refuse is sighted in a contractor’s allocated zone and that excuses about faulty equipment will no longer be accepted. He directed the Director of Procurement to conduct immediate checks on companies allocated more than one operational site, noting that applying for multiple slots without capacity will not be tolerated.

Wike also called on residents to provide feedback on contractor performance, assuring that such feedback will determine who gets paid. Addressing eight months of outstanding payments, he clarified that some areas, especially parts of Asokoro, had been neglected, and payments will be processed strictly on merit.

Earlier, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council Coordinator Felix Obuah said the 54 successful contractors were selected from over 500 applicants and have been assigned different beats across the FCT. Speaking for the contractors, Ibrahim Babayo thanked Wike for the opportunity and pledged commitment to a cleaner FCT.
