OpenAI to launch new AI model ‘o3 Mini’ soon

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has completed its new reasoning AI model, "o3 mini," and intends to launch it within a few weeks, CEO Sam Altman announced on Friday.

Altman announced on social media platform X that the release will include updates to both the application programming interface (API) and ChatGPT based on user feedback.

The Microsoft-backed company has been testing advanced reasoning models, such as "o3" and "o3 mini," to improve its ability to handle complex problems.

The initiative highlights increased competition with tech behemoths such as Alphabet's Google, as companies strive to create smarter and more versatile AI systems.

Initially scheduled for a January release, "o3 mini" will be released before the full "o3" model, which is expected to outperform existing large language models. These advancements aim to attract new users and investors by improving science, coding, and mathematics performance.

Last year, OpenAI introduced its "o1" models, which are specifically designed to handle more complex queries. These models demonstrated advanced reasoning abilities and represented a significant step forward in addressing difficult problems across multiple domains. The upcoming "o3" and "o3 mini" models are expected to be more powerful.

Earlier this week, OpenAI announced its entry into the virtual assistant market by introducing "Tasks," a beta feature for ChatGPT. This allows the company to directly compete with Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa.

The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 sparked a wave of AI investments, culminating in OpenAI receiving $6.6 billion in funding by October 2024. As the company continues to innovate with tools like "o3 mini" and other AI advancements, it is well positioned to solidify its leadership in the generative AI space.
