Indonesia to set minimum age for for children’s social media use
As part of its efforts to protect children in the digital space, Indonesia's Communications Minister, Meutya Hafid, has announced plans to implement a regulation establishing a minimum age for social media users. The move is consistent with global trends, following Australia's recent decision to prohibit children under 16 from using social media platforms. Australia has also imposed fines on tech giants such as Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, and TikTok for failing to prevent underage users from accessing their platforms.
Minister Hafid did not specify the minimum age under consideration, but she did confirm that President Prabowo Subianto fully supports the plan. "We discussed how to protect children in the digital space," Hafid said in a video posted on the president's office's YouTube channel. "The president directed us to proceed with this plan. He is very supportive of the child protection initiative."
Indonesia, with a population of around 280 million, is expanding its digital footprint. According to a survey conducted last year by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers' Association, internet penetration in the country reached 79.5%, with data from 8,700 respondents.
