Govt implements 88 safety standards for CNG vehicles

The Nigerian government has embraced 88 international standards for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) products to support the implementation of various CNG initiatives nationwide.

This decision is aimed at facilitating the seamless integration of CNG systems in vehicles and ensuring the use of high-quality products in Nigeria.

Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, the Director-General of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, announced this development in a statement released on Sunday to mark the World Standards Day celebration in Abuja. The theme for this annual celebration is "Our Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for Changing the Climate," as reported by The Punch.

Okeke emphasized that the purpose of the event was to raise awareness about the influence of standards on industrialization and economic growth.

Recent concerns have emerged about the conversion to CNG vehicles, particularly regarding the potential for explosions and other safety hazards associated with using CNG as a fuel source. Addressing these concerns is crucial for ensuring the safe adoption of CNG technology in the transportation sector.

The concerns stem from incidents involving improperly installed or maintained CNG systems that have led to dangerous situations, prompting questions about the adequacy of safety regulations and the need for more stringent oversight.

In response, the Director-General of SON highlighted that the government has adopted international standards to ensure that CNG products meet rigorous safety and quality criteria. This initiative aims to support the broader transition to sustainable energy solutions while addressing safety concerns.

He stated, "Standards are essential in achieving these objectives and in facilitating the development of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable practices.

"SON, in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's agenda, has embraced 88 international standards for Compressed Natural Gas products to bolster the success of CNG initiatives.

"Furthermore, SON is a participant in the committee responsible for developing the Natural Gas Vehicles Monitoring System, which aims to oversee the implementation of CNG systems in vehicles and ensure the use of quality products in Nigeria."

The SON DG revealed that the organization has conducted inspections of CNG components in China and India to ensure safety and quality assurance.

"SON has also carried out factory visits to China and India to certify CNG components and kits, prioritizing safety and quality assurance. As we navigate the challenges of climate change, we must recognize that standards are vital for successfully implementing mitigation strategies.

"Let me assure you that SON is committed to enhancing life through standardization and quality assurance, fostering consumer confidence, and improving the global competitiveness of Made-in-Nigeria products.

"Through global collaboration, standards bodies worldwide align their activities with the Sustainable Development Goals for peace, prosperity, and the welfare of people and the planet. International Standards offer practical solutions, which we must all embrace to be part of the solution, as they are the backbone of global progress," the statement concluded.
