FG begins nationwide distribution of free CNG tricycles
On Thursday, the distribution of free Compressed Natural Gas tricycles to cooperatives nationwide was initiated by the Federal Government.
In collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment at the Win-Win Industrial Park near the Sagamu Interchange in Ogun State, the distribution is part of the Presidential Natural Gas Initiative.
The primary goal of the distribution is to encourage the use of cleaner energy and provide support to local businesses across the country.
Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of Labour and Employment, expressed that the program signifies a transformative approach to empowering communities, fostering economic resilience, and promoting sustainability throughout the nation.
Representing the Minister, John Nyamali, the Director of Employment and Wages, expressed excitement about the introduction of CNG-powered tricycles, emphasizing their potential to provide mobility and create economic opportunities for thousands of Nigerians.
The Minister highlighted that the free CNG tricycles provided to the cooperatives would be utilized for commercial purposes, with the proceeds distributed among the members.
By leveraging the cooperative model, the program ensures that the benefits will directly impact the people. Each selected cooperative, composed of dedicated members, will operate these tricycles commercially, and the proceeds will be shared equitably among all cooperative members, uplifting every participant and their families.
The Minister revealed that the program is part of the government's commitment to inclusivity and reaching out to underserved communities to provide them with the tools they need to thrive and build a better future for themselves and their children.
The Director of PCNGI, Michael Oluwagbemi, confirmed that the plan is to donate between 1,500 and 2,000 CNG tricycles to cooperatives and select 60 cooperatives, with 10 from each of the six geopolitical zones in the country.
Oluwagbemi emphasized the importance of the model in providing tricycles powered by cheaper, safer, and more reliable compressed natural gas to the streets, with the Ministry of Labour ensuring the mobilization of cooperatives.
The PCNGI director announced that residents of Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, will enjoy free tricycle rides, marking the first benefit for the cooperative Irewolode located in the area.
The next two weeks, and possibly until the end of the month, our community will benefit from complimentary rides. We will compensate the operators to ensure that people can experience and appreciate the service. This initiative aims to demonstrate the safety, reliability, and affordability of CNG, encouraging our communities to take advantage of it. Additionally, Olujimi Sobayo, the Chairman of the Irewolede Cooperative Society, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for this program.
