Nigerians anticipate surprises as the Super Eagles kick off their AFCON 2023 campaign tomorrow

Amid uncertainties about the national team, Nigeria's Super Eagles are set to compete in the 34th Africa Cup of Nations, commencing today in Ivory Coast. A significant portion of Nigerians exhibits indifference and lack of concern regarding the outcome of Nigeria's AFCON 2023 campaign, expressing uncertainty about the team. However, a small yet hopeful segment remains optimistic about Nigeria's prospects in the tournament.

The Super Eagles, consisting of 24 out of the 25-man squad, arrived in Abidjan on Wednesday to represent the country in the competition. On the same day, the players familiarized themselves with the Alassane Quatara Stadium, the venue for their opening group match against Equatorial Guinea tomorrow. Following a training session, coach Jose Peseiro delivered a resolute message to the press, stating, "We want to win." Peseiro's declaration can be interpreted as a warning to Nigeria's group opponents, particularly Equatorial Guinea.

Despite his less-than-encouraging track record, his cautionary statement could be seen as an expression of his determination. He consistently expresses his dream and desire to secure victory in the AFCON with the Super Eagles. However, this optimism has not translated into positive outcomes, considering the less promising recent performances of the Super Eagles.

After a challenging qualification process for AFCON, the Super Eagles engaged in four matches, drawing with Saudi Arabia (2-2), defeating Mozambique (3-2), and drawing against Lesotho (1-1) in Uyo. They also suffered a 2-0 defeat to the AFCON-bound Guinea national team. The recent World Cup qualifier against Lesotho did little to boost confidence, as the Super Eagles struggled before securing a draw.

Peseiro, despite the loss to Guinea, remained defiant, emphasizing the experimentation with a new system in his post-match comments on NFF TV. Equatorial Guinea, in contrast, enters the tournament unbeaten in four consecutive matches, winning two and drawing two.

The Nigerian coach faces challenges, including a team lacking the finesse and chemistry of elite squads. A goalkeeper crisis, a creativity-deficient midfield, and late injuries to key players like Ndidi, Boniface, and Awoniyi further complicate Peseiro's task. Some Nigerians, however, maintain hope in the Super Eagles' potential, given the presence of quality players like Osimhen, Moffi, Chukwueze, Simon, Iwobi, Bassey, Aina, among others.

Despite these hurdles, a positive representation in Ivory Coast is expected. With CAF's best male player, Osimhen, and a skilled lineup, the Super Eagles aim to defeat Equatorial Guinea and navigate a challenging group that includes Guinea-Bissau and the host nation, Cote d'Ivoire.

The responsibility now lies with Peseiro to demonstrate his capability to achieve the unexpected—a successful campaign with the Super Eagles. Given proper coordination, the Eagles possess the potential to overcome any team on the continent.
