A tragic multiple road crash on the Kaduna-Zaria expressway claimed the lives of six individuals, leaving 11 others injured. The incident, which occurred at Aliko filling station on Tuesday around 06:25hrs, was attributed to speeding and dangerous driving by Kabir Nadabo, the Kaduna Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps. Although the accidents temporarily halted traffic, Nadabo reported that the road is now open for movement. The prompt response and rescue efforts of Zebra 35 Rigachikun aided in managing the aftermath of the collision.
“The preliminary investigation into the crash indicates the involvement of 23 individuals, with 11 sustaining injuries and, unfortunately, all 6 losing their lives,” stated Nadabo.
He explained that the Toyota bus involved was traveling from Ilesha to Batsari in Katsina State, emphasizing, “The driver was operating at a high speed, lost control, and collided with a moving vehicle, resulting in the crash.”
Nadabo highlighted that a significant number of road traffic accidents on the highway were caused by drivers not originating from Kaduna state, predominantly hailing from other states and often attributed to driver fatigue.
He expressed that as the primary agency in charge of transport management and road safety, the FRSC deeply regretted this regrettable yet preventable incident.
“The Kaduna State Corps will persist in carrying out its mandated responsibility of safeguarding lives and properties, with a paramount focus on raising awareness about the perils of road safety violations and promoting ethical road behavior.
“Kaduna State is a crucial corridor, hence the State Command has implemented safety measures to guide transporters on the importance of safe travels during this festive season and beyond.
“Keep in mind that the more we enlighten motorists about the significance of adopting safe behavior on the roads, the fewer road traffic crashes will occur,” he stated.
He urged stakeholders, especially transport unions, to assist in reaching out and promoting the language of safety to their drivers.
Nadabo mentioned that the corps is collaborating with media outlets to enhance public awareness regarding the dangers associated with dangerous driving, overloading, driving with worn-out tires, and fatigue resulting from extended journeys, among other issues.
However, he appealed to all categories of road users to adhere to safe driving practices at all times.
In December, the FRSC issued a warning to motorists regarding overloading and unsafe driving practices, including driving at night.
During a special patrol along the Zuba-Kaduna Expressway to enforce compliance with traffic rules and regulations, the Corps Marshal, FRSC, Dauda Biu, emphasized that adherence to traffic rules and regulations is crucial for safer highways and the smooth flow of traffic.
