Sanwo-Olu reopens Lagos discount market ‘Ounjè Eko’
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the reopening of the "Ounjè Eko" Sunday markets, which will provide a 25% discount on staple foods like rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and peppers.Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State's Commissioner for Information and Strategy, made the announcement via his official X handle.
He cited Abisola Olusanya, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, who told the media on Wednesday that the markets were ready to resume operations.
"Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed that the Sunday market Ounjè Eko with 25% cut in prices should return on Sunday," Omotoso wrote on social media.
He goes on to say, "Agric and Food Systems Commissioner Abisola Olusanya tells the media that everything is set." Lagosians, are you prepared?"
The "Ounjè Eko" markets, which first opened in March 2024, were intended to reduce the cost of essential food items for Lagos residents.
Despite their brief existence, the markets will return with locations in Ikeja, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, Epe, and Badagry divisions.
The markets are set to reopen on Sunday, giving Lagosians another chance to buy staple foods at significantly lower prices.
