Ogun banker orchestrated a staged abduction as a result of a debt amounting to N1.7 million

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed on Tuesday that Olumide Openaike, an employee of Kemta Oloko Microfinance Bank, initially reported missing and later found in Mokwa, Niger State, had staged his own abduction due to a debt of N1.7 million.

SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, verified this information to our correspondent on Tuesday.

The wife of the banker, Temitope, had previously informed journalists about her husband's disappearance on January 17 while en route to work. However, she later shared on Thursday that "I am happy to tell you that my husband has been found in a place called Mokwa in Niger State. He called me on Tuesday afternoon."

"He acquired a phone from one of the residents there, stating that his abductors had taken his phone. We advised him to file a report at the local police station; the officer on duty confirmed he was in Mokwa.

"Transportation funds were arranged and sent to him. He arrived in Ibadan yesterday, Wednesday, where he spent the night, and his family members are in Ibadan. He will be returning to Abeokuta today."

However, the police have categorized the reported abduction of the banker as fraudulent.

Confirming the occurrence to our correspondent, Odutola stated, “Yes, the police have determined that the banker, Olumide Openaike, fabricated his abduction due to a N1.7 million debt. The funds belong to the bank where he is employed.

“What transpired was that a customer was depositing the money into the bank, but Openaike was redirecting it for personal purposes. He claimed to have become depressed and opted to stage his own abduction. He is presently in police custody.”
