Mid-air collision claims two lives in Kenya as planes collide
A tragic incident unfolded in Nairobi on Tuesday as a student pilot and instructor lost their lives in a mid-air collision with a passenger plane. The collision involved local carrier Safarilink and the 99 Flying Training School. Nairobi police spokesman Adamson Bungei confirmed the fatalities via text message, and an initial police report noted that the passenger plane had requested to return for landing following the collision.
In a statement, Safarilink reported that their plane, carrying 44 individuals en route to Diani along the Kenyan coast, encountered a loud bang shortly after take-off. Fortunately, all passengers and crew on board remained unharmed. The airline, along with relevant agencies, is conducting an investigation into the incident.
In a conversation with AFP, 99 Flying School acknowledged "an incident this morning" but refrained from providing additional details. The training institution serves the private, commercial, and airline sectors, as indicated on its website. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has initiated investigations to determine the cause of the accident. Safarilink, with services to 18 destinations in Kenya, neighboring Tanzania, and tourist hub Zanzibar, continues to operate, as per its website.
