Governor of Kano State urges Tinubu to reopen land borders to address food crisis

Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to consider reopening the land borders for improved food security in the nation. During a courtesy visit by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Adewale Adeniyi, in Kano on Monday, Kabir-Yusuf highlighted the challenging economic conditions facing Nigerians.

He emphasized that reopening the borders would mitigate inflation and reduce the prices of essential food items. The governor expressed gratitude for the president's involvement in the ongoing national food initiative.

He regards Kano as the ideal host for the initiative, anticipating that its launch will alleviate the impact of food scarcity. "Another immediate intervention that can make food available and affordable to our population is for the Federal Government to consider the reopening of the borders and allow free importation of commodities," he stated.

Emphasizing the importance of reopening the borders, Kabir-Yusuf commended the Customs' food distribution scheme and urged proactive measures to prevent the diversion of commodities.

The governor assured of ongoing support to the Service, ensuring its effective discharge of duties.

Earlier, Adeniyi emphasized the need for effective collaboration between the Service and the Kano community, expressing the commitment of NCS to enhance cooperation and mutual understanding.

He committed to implementing policies that would streamline business processes and promote engagement with stakeholders.

Adeniyi engaged with members of the business community and various stakeholders in the state.

The Customs chief reiterated their dedication to tackling food insecurity and alleviating hardship in the country.

On Saturday, the Comptroller-General mentioned that consultations were underway regarding the reopening of borders, emphasizing that only President Bola Tinubu holds the authority to reopen borders in the country. Adeniyi conveyed this during an interactive session with members of the Kongolam border community in Mai’adua Local Government Area of Katsina State.

This response came amid calls for the reopening of the borders to alleviate economic challenges, among other concerns.
