Ex-Naval Chief Urges Governor to Preserve Lekki's Green Areas
A retired naval chief, Rear Admiral Ibikunle Olaiya, has called on the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to protect the green areas in Lekki, Lagos.
In a letter to the governor dated April 26, 2024, Olaiya expressed his "grave concern" about what he described as illegal construction on the green spaces in Lekki Phase 1, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
"Although these green areas were designated for crucial infrastructure projects like road and drainage expansions, and the construction of a light train to accommodate the growing population, they are being unlawfully sold for personal gain," Olaiya wrote in his letter.
Describing the situation as disheartening, Olaiya urged Sanwo-Olu to take action to safeguard the green areas.
He stated, “It is disheartening to see this happening, especially given the considerable investments and efforts made in the Lekki-Epe area over the years.
“Your administration's focus on infrastructure development, education, and upholding the state's original master plan has been admirable.
“However, it's concerning to witness some individuals undermining these efforts through illegal allocations, particularly during your tenure, considering you're a surveyor by profession."
"As you near your fifth year in leadership, where you've achieved remarkable progress, I urge you to tackle this matter with the seriousness it deserves. The saying ‘Eko oni baje!’ holds great significance, highlighting the importance of preserving the integrity of our city."
