Apple to cut 100 jobs ahead of iPhone 16 launch
Apple plans to lay off approximately 100 employees from its Services division, just before the highly anticipated iPhone 16 launch event on September 9.According to Bloomberg, the layoffs will affect several teams, including those who work on the Apple Books app and the Apple Bookstore. Employees reportedly learned of their job losses on Tuesday. These affected employees, who are part of Senior Vice President Eddy Cue's services group, have requested anonymity because the news has not been officially announced by Apple.
The exact size of Apple's Services division remains unknown. According to Reuters, Apple employed approximately 161,000 full-time employees on September 30, 2023.
The job cuts come as Apple shifts its focus to emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. The company has reorganized its teams and deprioritized certain projects, including Apple Books, but future updates are still planned.
This reduction in workforce is part of a larger trend of job cuts in the technology industry. Apple made headlines earlier this year when it laid off over 600 employees in California, marking the company's first significant job cuts since the pandemic. Furthermore, the company recently halted development of its high-end Vision headset and canceled a project involving smartwatch displays.
In February, Apple abandoned its ambitious multibillion-dollar plans to develop an electric vehicle, indicating a shift toward artificial intelligence initiatives. The electric vehicle project encountered numerous challenges, including shifting objectives, staff turnover, and missed deadlines, which influenced the decision to shift focus.
