Kaduna DisCo issues a caution to customers regarding outstanding bills
The management of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company has clarified that Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State did not cover the electricity bills for residents during Ramadan, dispelling rumors. They cautioned customers against disconnection.
Abdulazeez Abdullahi, Head of Corporate Communication at Kaduna Electric, stated that the governor subsidized the costs for enhanced power supply during Ramadan with an undisclosed amount. The statement highlighted that Governor Idris convened a meeting with Kaduna Electric's management, including Managing Director Umar Hashidu, to strategize improved electricity provision to Kebbi State.
Despite challenges in power generation, Kaduna Electric affirmed its commitment to collaborate with the Kebbi State Government to boost power supply using the Service Based Tariff mechanism introduced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Authority.
Following a joint analysis, an agreement was reached to enhance electricity supply in Birnin Kebbi, increasing daily hours from an average of six to 12. Feeder categories were established, with selected feeders allotted 16, 12, and eight hours of power daily.
"The enhancement in electricity provision was expected to result in a tariff adjustment for customers in Birnin Kebbi based on the increased hours of service. However, the Governor, in his generosity, opted to partially cover the difference as a subsidy and assistance during the Ramadan period," the statement read.
Furthermore, the governor reportedly cleared all outstanding debts owed by the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the state to Kaduna Electric for electricity consumed. Additionally, he pledged prompt settlement of the state government's monthly bills moving forward.
"Given the provided facts, we aim to refute the circulating speculations suggesting that the Kebbi State Government settled Kaduna Electric for electricity supplied to individual customers during the holy month of Ramadan, thereby exempting customers from payment for consumed electricity during this period.
Hence, our valued customers in Kebbi State are urged to promptly settle their monthly power consumption bills, as customary. Bills for February have been issued, and customers are expected to settle their dues in full to avoid disconnection," cautioned the DisCo.
