The rejection I faced from my colleagues in terms of collaboration - CKay
Nigerian artist CKay expressed his desire to expand the global success of his hit song 'Love Nwantiti,' but he encountered reluctance from some colleagues when seeking collaboration. In a recent episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, he also expressed confusion over why 'Love Nwantiti' failed to secure any awards in Nigeria, despite amassing over a billion streams and receiving numerous accolades internationally.
CKay shared, "I encountered challenges with awards in general because I sense there's a lot at play. I don't know the individuals behind the awards or their intentions. I've witnessed situations where deserving music doesn't receive recognition, not only at the Grammys but also at [Nigerian awards] back home."
"It's intriguing that 'Love Nwantiti,' with its 6x platinum status, hasn't received any awards in Nigeria. I hesitate to call it shameful, but it raises numerous questions, fueling my reservations about awards," CKay remarked.
He went on to say, "I want to believe there's a lot of love in the [Nigerian music] industry, but unfortunately, I doubt I'm correct. Despite being generally open, I've encountered challenges in collaborating with individuals in the industry, even after the success of 'Love Nwantiti.'"
